Installing Scientific Linux 6.10 in a Virtual Machine on Windows 10 Host

Installing Scientific Linux 6.10 in a Virtual Machine on Windows 10 Host

                                                                     Sourav Sadhukhan

A virtual machine is an OS installed over a different host OS interface using Virtual Box. Here I am going to show how to install a ScientificLinux-6.10 operating system virtually in a Windows 10 host machine using Oracle Virtual Box.

Before we start, we need two things beforehand

1) Oracle Vitual Box (Windows Host) installed in the Windows Machine

For this you can go to Download VirtualBox-6.0 and install it in your Windows system after downloading it.

2) The .iso file of the system which we want to install virtually must be saved in your device.

You can go to ScientificLinux 6.10 and download Scientific Linux 6.10. You need to download the .iso file of the OS you wish to install virtually.

Configuration Settings

First open Oracle VirtualBox in your Windows system    → you will see a window like this

Now select new to create new virtual machine

After selecting new, a window will open asking name and type of operating system you want to install virtually

Give your Virtual Machine a name : I have given ScientificLinux 6 as I am going to install Scientific Linux 6 OS

 ↓

Select machine folder  → select machine type : In this case Linux → select version compatible with the OS you are going to install in virtual box and hardware of your device

I selected Red Hat(64-bit) as Scientific Linux is comparable with Red Hat and my laptop is 64 bit.

 click next

                                                       ↓

Now select amount of RAM you want to allocate for the virtual machine →  click next

In this window you need to choose whether you want to create any virtual disk or wish to use an existing one →  click create if you want to create new : I wanted to create new VHD

Choose the file type of hard disk you want to create virtually →  click next

If you want your virtual machine to store data within a allocated portion then select 'Fixed size' option otherwise you can select 'Dynamically allocated' option →  click next

Here you need to select the size of the virtual hard disk you want to create and allocate a location for this VHD  where you want to store the data of your Virtual Machine and click create

You can see new virtual machine named - ScientificLinux 6 is created : but wait, it's not the final step

We need to give this virtual machine access to the iso file we downloaded earlier and need to configure some settings before installation starts  →  click on the icon- settings

Go to system settings  choose processor →  select number of processors you want to dedicate for your virtual machine

Now we are going to load the .iso file for Scientific Linux 6.0 here.

Click on storage → click empty as shown → select disc icon in optical drive option → then open the folder where the iso file is located and open the iso file

Now iso file is loaded in the virtual machine and ready for installation

Select normal start to start installation → Boot will start automatically

                                               ↓

Wait for automatic start or press enter

You can skip the media test option

                                                                               Click next

Choose installation language and appropriate keyboard

Choose basic storage device → Click next

Name the computer, select time zone and generate 6 digit root password and you will reach the window asking type of installation you would like → Click next

Select the installation type according to your need : I want replace my existing linux system

I have selected Desktop installation since I am going to install this virtual machine in my laptop

If you have followed the previous steps correctly, package installation will start

Congratulations you have successfully installed Scientific Linux 6.10 in your virtual machine

After rebooting the system you will see the 'Welcome window'

Here you need to accept license, create a user account, set date and time and choose whether you want Kdump enable or not

If you disable Kdump then your system will ask for reboot

After successful rebooting you will see the user log in window

Congratulations you have successfully completed your mission of installing Scientific Linux 6.10 in virtual platform

Hope the information was helpful to you
