Indian Literacy Data 2020: Kerala Best Performing Among Indian States

The report ' Household Social Consumption: Education in India as part of 75th round of National Sample Survey' based on National Statistics Office survey shows that in India literacy rate is about 77.7% on an average. 

Kerala is the best performing state with literacy rate of about 96.2%. Whereas, Andhra Pradesh has literacy rate of about 66.4% only, worst among the Indian states, according to the survey by NSO. The survey was conducted all over India reaching about 1.13lakh households which is spanned over 8000 villages and 6000 urban blocks. The participants of the survey was in the age group of 7 yrs and above.

Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Assam are the other best performing states after Kerala with literacy rate about 88.7%, 87.6%, 86.6% and 85.9% respectively.

According to the study literacy rate in urban India is 87.7%, much higher compared to rural India, where literacy rate is about 73.5%. All over India male literacy rate is 84.7%, which is quite high compared to female literacy rate of 70.3%.

Some Interesting Findings From The Literacy Data


 1) Kerala has the highest literacy rate in the country followed by Delhi and Uttarakhand.


2) Andhra Pradesh has the lowest literacy rates. Other worst performing states are Rajasthan and Bihar.


3)11 Indian states has literacy rate lower than National average (77.7%).


4) In all the states male literacy rate is higher than female literacy rate.


5)According to the report nearly 4 per cent of rural households and 23 per cent of urban household possessed computer.
